Cancer has always been synonymous with loss and fear. With today's new advancements in prevention, detection and treatment, a diagnosis of cancer no longer necessarily means facing a terminal disease. Rather, as new advances provide more treatment options, cancer increasingly takes on the shape of a chronic condition.

Recently, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) announced that leading cancer organizations report that Americans' risk of dying from cancer continues to decline, indicating that progress in prevention, early detection, and newer treatments appear to be helping in the fight against this disease.

The next revolution in cancer therapy will likely find its roots in the ongoing Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), a pilot project initiated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). Scientists have begun to discover that numerous genes play a role in cancer, but they have only uncovered a small portion of these genes. The Cancer Genome Atlas is aimed at helping to accelerate the understanding of the genetic make-up of cancer. Researchers hope that a better understanding of how cancer develops and spreads, will lead to new tests to detect cancer in its early, most treatable stages; new therapies to target cancer; and, ultimately, new strategies to prevent cancer.

Understanding of the genetic basis for cancer has already allowed researchers to develop the first drugs that target faulty genes, which are making a difference in the lives of patients. Just ask Bob Ferber. In July of 1999, the Los Angeles attorney was diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), a malignant cancer of the bone marrow and blood.

Ferber tried many futile attempts at treatment before entering a clinical trial for a drug now called Gleevec (imatinib mesylate) tablets to help fight his disease. Gleevec, approved by the FDA in 2001, is one of the first "targeted therapies" and works by turning off the specific cause of Ph+ CML, something The Cancer Genome Atlas hopes to make possible for many more cancers. Within months, Ferber's white blood cell counts were within normal range and his disease was in remission.

"My CML diagnosis was a real scare. But, I'm grateful now. I'm grateful for every new day I have."

Sadly, not everyone's story is as positive as Ferber's. Hopefully, with the continued advancement of cancer awareness and research, preventative treatment and The Cancer Genome Atlas, cancer patients will one day be able to breathe a sigh of relief and agree with Ferber when he says, "Every time I challenge this cancer, emotionally or physically-and survive-that's a victory for me."

Researchers have developed the first cancer-fighting drugs that target faulty genes.

Bullous dermatologic reactions (eg, erythema multiforme and Stevens-Johnson syndrome) have also been reported. In some cases, the reaction recurred upon rechallenge. Several foreign postmarketing cases note a resolution or improvement of bullous reaction following dose reduction with or without supportive care. Dose adjustments may be necessary due to hepatotoxicity, other nonhematologic adverse events, or hematologic adverse events. Therapy with Gleevec was discontinued for adverse events in 3% to 5% of patients. Patients with severe hepatic impairment should be treated at a starting dose of 300mg/day and should be closely monitored. Gleevec is metabolized by the CYP3A4 isoenzyme and is an inhibitor of CYP3A4, CYP2D6, and CYP2C9. Dosage of Gleevec Tablets should increase by at least 50% and clinical response should be carefully monitored in patients receiving Gleevec Tablets with a potent CYP3A4 inducer such as rifampin or phenytoin. Examples of commonly used drugs that may significantly interact with Gleevec include acetaminophen, warfarin, erythromycin, and phenytoin. For daily dosing of 800mg and above, dosing should be accomplished using the 400mg tablets to reduce exposure to iron. Use of Gleevec Tablets is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to imatinib or to any other component of Gleevec Tablets. Women of childbearing potential should be advised to avoid becoming pregnant while taking Gleevec Tablets. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, women should be advised to avoid breast-feeding while taking Gleevec Tablets.

Common Side Effects of Gleevec Tablets1: The majority of the approximately 1700 adult patients who received Gleevec in clinical studies experienced adverse events at some time, but most were mild to moderate in severity. The most frequently reported adverse events were superficial edema (58%−81%), nausea (47%−74%), diarrhea (39%−70%), muscle cramps (28%−62%), vomiting (21%−58%), rash (36%−53%), fatigue (30%−53%), musculoskeletal pain (30%−49%), and abdominal pain (30%−40%).* Supportive care may help management of most mild-to-moderate adverse events so that prescribed dose can be maintained whenever possible. Gleevec tablets should be taken with food and a large glass of water to minimize gastrointestinal (GI) irritation. Gleevec tablets should not be taken with grapefruit juice.

In the battle against breast cancer, patients are increasingly prescribed oral medications, such as hormonal therapy, to limit the risk of disease recurrence. Research has indicated that patients should stay on these drugs for five years to gain maximum benefits.

But recently, the healthcare community has started to ask a question once limited to managing common colds, not cancer: Do breast cancer patients take their medications as prescribed?

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every year in the U.S. Of those, approximately 100,000 have cancer types that are likely to respond to hormonal therapy. Taking the therapy as prescribed for the full five years can reduce their risk of recurrence.

Easier Said than Done

Based on findings from a recent symposium on medication adherence among breast cancer patients, candidates for hormonal therapy-some 500,000 women in the U.S.-may not be reaping the full benefits of their drug regimens. According to some research studies, non-compliance rates have reached as high as 40 percent.

The Symposium, called the Compliance Strategic Initiative (CSI), addressed issues that lead to medication non-compliance among breast cancer patients, and it identified possible solutions to these issues. Representatives from leading patient advocacy organizations and professional healthcare associations, as well as oncology experts and survivors from across the nation, gathered to share their perspectives. The CSI was led by a Steering Committee which included representatives from the American Cancer Society, CancerCare, the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), and Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization.

"Through research, we know that five years of adjuvant hormonal therapy in women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer prolongs survival and reduces recurrence," said D. Lawrence Wickerham, MD, associate chairman of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project. "And yet, studies also show that not all patients stay on hormonal therapy as prescribed. It is important that healthcare providers understand why women make that decision, so we can address the issue with the information, resources and support needed to help them through this part of their treatment."

Based on results of the meeting, participants gained a better understanding of the factors that contributed to non-compliance. Among those factors: patients often do not feel empowered to talk with their doctors about tough issues, such as side effects; doctors and other healthcare professionals aren't equipped with resources to assist patients in coping with or eliminating side effects; and after their acute phase of treatment, women may often feel they are left to manage therapy on their own. Physicians are under increasing pressures of time and performance and may not always have the skill set to listen well to their patients, or, simply not realize their patients may not be taking their medication. Breast cancer is a highly treatable disease that now has a survival rate of 85 percent. Yet more than 212,000 women are still diagnosed with the condition each year.

Since early diagnosis is an important key to successful treatment, doctors say it's important that all women over the age of 18 do a Breast Self-Exam (BSE) every month, two or three days after their menstrual cycle. In addition, women between 20 and 39 should have a clinical breast exam at least every three years and women 40 and older should have a mammogram every year.

For the past 10 years, BMW of North America has worked with The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation-the largest fund-raiser for breast cancer research in America-to help spread the message of early detection and to help ensure that breast cancer research continues. The groups' Ultimate Drive program has raised millions to help fund the efforts.

The initiative, fully underwritten by BMW, consists of two fleets of specifically badged BMWs making a cross-country trek, stopping in communities along the way to hold daylong events. Cancell Cantron Procel Taxol was developed by a biochemist by the name of James V. Sheridan. He developed it in the year 1936 and gave it the name Entelev. Because he felt that Entelev was a gift from God, to be given freely to any cancer patient desiring to have it, and that he was just the agent used to create and dispense it, James Sheridan refused to accept any financial compensation for any of the Entelev which he gave away freely.

As time went by, Entelev was also developed under other names, amongst them Cancell, Cantron, Procel and Taxol.

James Sheridan tested his formula on animals during the 1940's with what he felt was great success.

During the 1960's, while employed by the Battelle Laboratories which are the testing centers for the National Cancer Institute, James Sheridan conducted further research on Entelev. According to the records of the National Cancer Institute, the two day test run which James Sheridan was allowed to conduct showed an amazingly significant reduction in the size of tumor cells but only a small amount of dead cells. A large number of medical professionals are of the opinion that had the test been allowed to continue for a longer period of time, the shrunken cells would also have died. Because there was only a small amount of dead cells in comparison to some other products, the National Cancer Institute gave Entelev a response of negative results. They refused to consider that a longer period of time might have shown that Entelev might have shown itself to be the best product in the long run.

Entelev works by reducing the amount of energy produced by the adenosine triphosphate in each cell. In cells which have not been struck by cancer, this reduction does not effect their function however in the matter of cancerous cells, it causes them to die. This is a slower process than that of chemotherapy, but does not involve poisoning and is considered by many medical professionals to be not only a more effective treatment but one which is less harmful to other parts of the body.

The so-called nightmare aspects of chemotherapy can be combated. "Eat your vegetables, they're good for you!" Remember those words? I would imagine that most of us find them familiar. I have to wonder though if our parents and grandparents could have told us why they were good for us.

Now, however, because of scientific studies which our medical professionals in today's world have conducted, we have an answer to give to the children in our lives. Our vegetables help to prevent cancer. This is especially true of dark green vegetables, such as broccoli.

Broccoli is considered to be especially beneficial for us. Broccoli has a large amount of something called sulforaphane. Sulforaphane has been shown through medical studies to be especially useful in preventing cancer.

Medical professionals conducted a number of studies on animals and found that those animals who were fed broccoli regularly in their diets had a much lower amount of cancer than did the control group which was not fed broccoli.

According to a medical professional, Dr. Paul Talalay, of Hopkins' Brassica Chemoprevention Laboratory, broccoli eaten in it's early stages doesn't have the same bitter taste that we tend to associate with it when it is more fully developed. Dr. Talalay claims that his medical studies have proven that broccoli sprouts just don't taste like broccoli yet have the same beneficial characteristics when it comes to fighting cancer.

If you just can't stand the taste of broccoli, not even knowing that it will give you a large amount of sulforaphane, there are other plants that contain it also. You might want to try arugula, bok' choy, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, collards, water cress, daikon, kale, kohirabi, mustard and of course turnips. One of the latest theories concerning cancer is that it is man made. After careful studies made of Egyptian mummies, professional research teams have reported that out of hundreds of examinations only one case of cancer was found to exist. When compared to the fact that one out of every four deaths in today's world is said to be the result of some form of cancer, this leads us to wonder why the amazing difference. What are we doing in today's world that our long ago ancestors did not do? Or perhaps we should also ask what did they do in their time that we are not doing today?

What about other forms of life style? Did these early ancestors get more exercise than we do in today's world? My, what a high sounding, futuristic title! Better yet, what if the implications are true and achievable by any and all cancer patients? As a matter of fact, this is quite true and has been successfully expressed in the lives of many of those exceptional patients who were just not willing to be good patients and die within the bounds of medical propriety in compliance with some oncologists death sentence. These are the people who risk the wrath of medical science by getting well for the wrong reason.

I once attended one of Dr. Herb Benson's Harvard Med School seminars on Spirituality in Healing. One of many gems of wisdom that I remember from that highlight event was a statement to the effect that mankind is the only creature endowed with a memory of the future. He further emphasis that very real value can be derived from "remembered wellness".

When I first started out on my death struggle with metastatic kidney cancer, I was aware that much of what I needed to know to best survive would have to be learned the hard way by diligent effort and my own research. It was clear early on that the information dispensed by my oncologist would be of a nature that he deemed sufficient for me and would go no farther, regardless of a valid need to know. In retrospect and in fairness, I don't think he really knew much beyond the protocols. Certainly nothing of such matters that are embraced by the field of Mind/Body medicine.

Few newly diagnosed patients are even aware of a remarkable book, "Imagery and Disease", published by Dr. Frank Lawlis in 1978. A later book by Dr. Bernie Siegel, "Love, Medicine and Miracles" was published in 1986 which further expanded the role of the mind in healing cancer. Out of these came a cancer fighting technique called "Guided Imagery" by which commands to the immune system to track down and kill cancer cells are conveyed to the subconscious right brain by visual images while the patient is in a state of deep relaxation.

The value of this technique derives from utilizing all of the following facts about cancer.

? There has never been a form of cancer that has not had at least a few survivors.

? These are typically referred to as "miracle remissions", but little in the way of research has been done with these survivors to understand what triggers a remission. We tend to look at death, not life, when it comes to cancer research.

? There is no cancer cell that cannot be killed by one or more of the elements of the human immune system, if they can just get into the attack mode.

? Every cancer cell has on its surface an identifying marker called "Antigen" which, if recognized, will result in the cancer cell being attacked and killed by immune cells. Instructions to attack can be conveyed, via imagery, using a direct neural path.

By far the best way for the patient to pursue this treatment modality is with the help of a guide, usually a voice on a CD, who literally guides the relaxed patient through scene after healing scene. In my case, I was really under the gun since, treatments having failed, I was told that I had only three more months to live. Realizing the futility of wasting any more time with a failed medical system, I pursued GI with focused intensity. One of the key elements of the imagery program was one wherein I found myself, some five years hence, speaking to a large crowd of cancer patients, telling them how I was able to orchestrate a program of remission. Thus, as far as all sensory perception goes, I was actually working some five years in the future in a situation that had all of the trappings of reality. I did this twice a day for months on end. I would visualize the auditorium, the steps to the podium, what the audience looked like (particularly those on the front row) and a myriad of other details of the scene, including the speech itself. The details of what happened, both in my life and those of others, are related in my recent book, "THREE MONTHS TO LIFE". Needless to say, I did not die as I was assured by competent authority that I would, but was able to kill out the cancer cells in three months time.

It was not too long after that when I attended the annual meeting of the Kidney Cancer Association in Chicago. This was a three day affair that was attended in those days by a mixture of patients and doctors. The highlight event was the "Survivors Banquet" held on the Saturday night before the meeting closed on Sunday. The schedule called for a well know keynote speaker to make the formal address. For whatever reason, this illustrious speaker cancelled just hours before the affair and left the committee in a desperate state of affairs. Since my story was fairly well known, they asked me if I could deliver this talk without time for preparation. I assured them that I could as I had been giving this speech twice a day for well over a year! It was a smashing success and I actually won the audience survey for the best presentation of that three day conference.

Now let us fast forward through a decade to the present and the real story behind this article. Last December, there came to my house one Danny Newman, who was near death from metastatic lung cancer, his treatments having failed. His daddy brought him and we helped them into the front door and to a comfortable chair with all the oxygen bottles attending. To tell the truth, Lucy and I were actually fearful that he would die before our eyes but that did not keep us from having an in depth session wherein I took him through both my experience and that of others given in the book.

Danny was surprised to find so much really good science behind this concept and his mind was fully open to possibilities. I sent them on their way with reading material and a copy of my guided imagery CD. In regard to the latter, I strongly recommended to him that he develop the concept of the speech to cancer patients some years into the future.

You can imagine my surprise when late one night in April, my phone rang and it was Danny who just could not wait until morning to tell me that he had just got back from the oncology center and THEY COULD NOT FIND A SINGLE CANCER CELL IN HIS BODY! There was not a dry eye in the place when I turned the mike over to Danny to close with his story which, in effect, gave him the opportunity to deliver the speech he had been visualizing for so long, exactly as I had been privileged to do in Chicago a decade ago. With teary eyes, he realized that, from the farthest reaches of his hopes, his visualization of a future event had now become a magnificent reality.

I have not a doubt in my mind that there is a valid scientific explanation, bordering as it does on the spiritual, for what happened in our lives a decade apart. I believe that the effect of continually pounding this image into the subconscious mind empowered it with the command to deliver us alive and well to the appointed event when its place in the chronology of time had finally arrived. In chapter nine of my book, I recount how I was privileged to work with one of the eminent scientists of our time, Dr. Andreas Bette of the Royal Technology Institute in Stockholm.. His field embraced such things as black holes, parallel universes, and massless particles. He felt that human thought was composed of massless particles and, as such, were not bound by the laws that govern time and space. This appeared to give some credence of the notion of slipping out of time and space and subsequently returning. As he put it to me, you have to be a little crazy to work in this field. Whatever the case, I have come to believe that the following statement is true and it is one for which I would like to be remembered as the author, to wit:

Most of us are scared stiff of developing cancer. That is quite understandable - who wants to spend a couple of years undergoing chemotherapy only to die a couple of years later? It is stated that green tea is an anti-oxidant and it is alleged that anti-oxidants help eliminate free radicals which can cause cancer. If this is true, then the claims for green tea are perhaps more believable.

However, the claims are so all-encompassing that it makes me sceptical. I am reading a report just now that claims that green tea will prevent the growth of cancerous cells in the: "... aesophagus, bladder, on the skin, in the ovaries, the pancreas and the prostate".

That is a very tall order indeed.

The difficulty for me with all these claims is that they are not substantiated - there are no references that you can follow that do not lead to companies selling green tea. This is a difficulty.

Some will say that the government or the pharmaceutical companies are suppressing the knowledge because they want to sell more expensive drugs - and this might be true - grist to the mill for conspiracy theorists and retailers of Chinese tea.

Oftentimes we measure our love for the person through the things or needs that we want reciprocated. We forgot the real meaning of love and the real joy from loving. For ten months of being with the woman he love, Joel did not see the odd situation. He did not intentionally fail to see the difficulty of his situation. What he saw is the feeling of love with a woman who has to go through a physical pain. And what he felt is the joy of giving up his life to be with a woman he loves. In being selfless, Joel discovers the real joy of loving. And he confesses to the people at the chapel that even in death he sees May as beautiful as the day he married her to the same chapel she now laid to rest.

I have heard a lot of claims by the eminent homeopaths of my city to CURE the cancer, but I think let's not cheat patients and homeopathy. CANCER - Its Cause, Prevention and Treatment

?I offer a Nature Cure interpretation of the disease commonly called Cancer.

Cancer is basically a reaction to the presence of a highly irritant substance or influence known as a carcinogen - (Cancer producer).

The persistent presence (internally or externally) of a carcinogen may cause cancer.

One of the generally unsuspected irritants is CARBON.

Any substance that has been carbonized by excessive heating, burning, roasting or toasting may become carcinogenic.

The main internal sources of carbon are toasted bread or biscuits, grilled foods, coffee, tea, cocoa, caramel, so-called "health foods" and beverages, toasted nuts, and tobacco smoke.

When absorbed externally almost any strongly acid or strongly alkaline substance can, when ingested by a highly toxemic organism, be irritant enough to be carcinogenic.

The causes of cancer being known, the prevention of this complaint becomes self-evident.

For some, the mere mention of these words makes people weak in the knees and sick to their stomachs. Far too many of us have seen family members and friends have had their lives changed dramatically as the result of having been diagnosed with cancer. Cancer Fighting - What Did Hannibal Know That We Don't?

After a two year hiatus, I have recently gone through the drill of CT and bone scans. This time there was an inordinate delay in getting the results. A couple of nights ago, my doctor called me from Chicago to say that he had personally read the films and that everything was fine. It was in that moment of euphoria and gratitude that I realized that, even though I did not speak of it, the old enemy fear had managed to sneak back into my subconscious mind. I then recalled how, in those terrible years when I was on the death watch, I used to let the details of death dominate my thinking to the exclusion to the more important details of life and future events. It was only after I was able to reach out and seize information based hope that my mindset began to shift to those more important details of future events wherein I was needed to play a part.

Now what, you might ask, does this have to do with Hannibal? Hannibal was not only a military genius, he was a master of illusion and misdirection. He is famous for transporting elephants over the Alps to use in his campaign against Rome.

Actually, he only had 37 elephants and many of these died along the way. These cumbersome beast had little or no actual military value but they inspired fear in the ranks of the Romans, few of whom had ever seen one. Thus, Hannibal succeeded in getting the Roman commanders to concentrate on dealing with the elephants to the extent that they neglected more important matters dealing with the battle before them. The result of this was that Hannibal's army of 40,000 slaughtered an entire army of over 80,000 Romans on the field of Cannae. Clearly the Roman generals would have done well to ignore the elephants and deal with the business of battle.

All too often cancer turns out to be synonymous with death. Strange since there are so many things that cancer cannot do. It cannot destroy love. It cannot take away personal values. It cannot take away hope unless the patient chooses to give it away to those deadly statistics as pronounced by some insensitive doctors. It cannot force one to make unwanted decisions. In short, one might well say that it is far too impotent to be the subject of all consuming fear. Perhaps the patient should quit looking at the elephants and begin to look at those more important details associated with a post remission future. It can and has been done in the lives of numerous exceptional cancer patients.

Now pushing 76, I am well aware that my days on earth are not unlimited. Rather than look at this prospect with fear, I must confess to certain feeling of excitement at the prospect of finally understanding what is on the other side and am looking forward with great interest to what the work will be like in the new dimension. I think of how St. Paul put it when he wrote, "I count that to die is gain". Having fought the good fight he could say this with confidence. He also wrote that whereas hope and faith will end in fruition and realization, love endureth forever. There is absolutely nothing that cancer can do to alter this fundamental truth.

Is Your Cancer Treatment Really a Cure?

My research on natural cancer cures has discovered that there are many claims being made about different substances, including drugs, herbs, supplements, and/or treatments, and various therapies, actually "curing" cancer, when in reality, they are ONLY treating one or more of the many SYMPTOMS of cancer, much like what the Medical Industry is well-noted for doing.

I hope that the explanation I present in this article will enable people to clearly and quickly identify any substances and/or treatments that actually cure cancer, versus those that only treat one or more symptoms of cancer, and need additional help to become part of a real cure. I believe that this distinction will prove to be invaluable for my readers in considering and evaluating ANY treatment, therapy or individual substance represented as being a "cancer cure". If they don't address the primary cause of cancer, i.e. oxygen deficiency, then all of these substances and therapies are in fact, just treatments of cancer symptoms.

As I have already discussed in an earlier article: the primary cause of cancer is a deficiency of oxygen. In fact, it has been discovered that when a healthy cell is deprived of 60% or more of its necessary oxygen, it will become cancerous! Also, as previously mentioned, we have polluted our world so much, such that the air we breathe is only about 20% oxygen, and it is physically impossible for us to get enough oxygen in our body cells by just normal breathing! So, I think that it is safe to say, that if we manage to create a highly oxygenated environment for our cells (in addition to breathing), that we will actually prevent our healthy cells from becoming cancerous, and at the same time destroy the cancerous cells that already exist! Whatever can accomplish this ONE task: increasing oxygen to our cells, can officially be called a cure for cancer. I listed some of the cures that I discovered in my research, like Oxygen Therapy, Ozone Therapy, and 35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide. All of these treatments can officially be called cures for cancer because they directly address the fundamental and primary cause of cancer - oxygen deficiency.

But you may ask, "What about all these other "natural cancer cures" we see populating the Internet and that seem to work?"

Well, if the body is oxygen-deficient for extremely long periods of time, then the cancer cells continue to grow and multiply, rather than being destroyed and eliminated by the immune system. This creates secondary and tertiary symptoms in the form of abundant duplication of cancerous cells, increased toxins, tumor formation, and the attraction of various germs, bacteria, pathogens, and many other anaerobic micro-organisms, just to name a few. From my research I've discovered that most of the so-called "natural cancer cures" really address the secondary or tertiary symptoms of cancer, rather than the primary cause, which is oxygen deficiency, and until the primary cause of cancer is addressed, there will always be the chance that when using these various "symptomatic cures", that the cancer will return again, unless additional steps are taken to address the primary cause -oxygen deficiency!

There are many substances like drugs, herbs, chemicals, treatments, etc. that actually kill cancer cells, but that achievement alone does not make ANY of them a Cancer "Cure", for the simple reason that they do not address the primary cause of cancer - oxygen deficiency! What this means is that even if you kill all the cancerous cells in your body, when you allow yourself to remain oxygen-deficient, then there's a good chance that more cells will eventually become cancerous in the future, and you'll be back where you started! By the same logic, if you remove all the toxins from the body by using a great internal or colon-cleansing product, or herb, and not address the primary cause, then even more toxins will be created by the massive number of cells still becoming cancerous, as well as the attracted number of anaerobic micro-organisms that will take up residency in the oxygen-deficient body organs and tissues. If you electrically "zap" all of the anaerobic micro-organisms in the blood stream, as suggested by Dr. Robert Beck (see article and video "Blood Electrification For Alternative Cancer Treatment"), new ones will eventually appear again (and Dr. Beck actually discovered this exact result with AIDS patients!) because of the continued oxygen-deficient environment still present in the body. In other words, all of the "symptomatic cures" that address the secondary and tertiary causes of cancer do not address the primary cause of Cancer and therefore should NOT be classified as Cancer Cures!

When I discovered the videos with Charlotte Gerson speaking in-depth about The Gerson Therapy, I immediately classified the Therapy as a "cancer cure", even though I could not see how the Therapy solved the problem of oxygen deficiency! And after thinking considerably about this necessary distinction I had made between things that cure cancer and things that only cure cancer symptoms, I had to ask myself this burning question...

"How is it possible that a 100% Raw Organic Fruit and Vegetable Diet could be classified as a Natural Cancer Cure?"

Yes, I understood that the Therapy solved two major problems, the nutritional deficiency and toxic build-up, but I didn't exactly see the relationship between the Therapy and oxygen-deficiency, which I had already determined previously, was an absolute MUST for any Cancer Cure to be effective over time!

So, for the past few weeks, I've been in this seemingly conundrum. I thought that I might find the answer in Dr. Baroody's book, "ALKALIZE OR DIE", but surprisingly, I didn't find the answer there. However, by divine guidance, I was directed to "Ask Jeeves" and typed in "What is A Cure?" And somehow, I miraculously ended up at a website entitled "Understanding Cancer and Cancer Cells", and I began to read and discovered the EXACT ANSWER to my dilemma!! (Boy, I really LOVE the Internet!!)

For the answer to that question which has tormented me for weeks, we have to understand a little bit of chemistry. It is a chemical fact that alkaline solutions with a pH over 7.0 tend to absorb oxygen, while acidic solutions (pH below 7.0) tend to expel oxygen. However, when there is a deficiency of minerals in the diet, your body is forced to remove those crucial minerals, such as calcium, from the saliva, spinal fluids, kidneys, liver, etc., in order to maintain the blood pH at 7.4. This, in turn, causes the mineral deficient fluids and organs to become acidic, and therefore, also oxygen deficient, which we already know causes cancer, as well as just about every other disease!

My best friend and life partner, Colleen, is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. Apricot seeds are more available to consumers now than laetrile because in 1971 the US government's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned laetrile. Many believe that this ban was put in place because the laetrile was from a natural food source that couldn't be patented or controlled by the large pharmaceutical companies for profit like they do for cancer drugs and traditional cancer treatments. There has been much misinformation published about apricot seeds.

The most common belief promoted by the pharmaceutical companies and medical profession is that apricot seeds are poison. That is true to a point. Apricot seeds contain organic cyanide and benzaldyhide but then so do many other foods such as almonds, lima beans, soy, spinach and bamboo shoots to name a few. Many foods containing organic cyanide are safe because the cyanide remains bound and locked as part of another molecule and therefore cannot cause harm.

There is an enzyme called rhodanese which is found in normal healthy human cells but not in cancer cells. It basically catches any free cyanide molecules and renders them harmless by combining them with sulfur naturally. They are converted to a cyanate which is a neutral substance and easily passed through the urine with no harm to the normal cells.

But there is an enzyme called beta-glucosidase that is found only in cancer cells, and is considered the "unlocking enzyme" for amygdalin molecules. It releases both the benzaldyhide and the organic cyanide to work with the protective enzymes in healthy cells to attack and destroy cancer cells. The healthy non-cancerous cells are not destroyed in this natural process.

Don't Fall Asleep Again! Cancer As A Wake-Up Call

Cancer was a wake-up call for me. Not so much for changing my eating or exercise habits - overall, I had not been treating my body too disrespectfully over the years. Instead, cancer woke me up to life again.

What do I hold as important? Where do I really want to be in life? Am I happy? Soul searching and questions flooded my mind throughout my diagnosis, surgery and chemotherapy.

Questioning what I was drawing from life, reassessing my wants and needs, was a powerful gift - and one for which I am profoundly grateful. Now that I have found myself awake to my life again, I face a challenge that I think many survivors confront. How do I keep from falling asleep again?

During my chemotherapy I wrote a blog to capture and share my experiences with friends and family. Every once in a while I return to read my blog. Increasingly, it becomes difficult to fully identify with the person who went through that experience. However - the blog helped to keep me awake long enough to establish new directions in my life. In the end, keeping from falling asleep required being blunt with myself. I could have died from cancer. I fought the cancer with surgery and chemotherapy, and I kept my body alive. Was I willing to allow my newly re-discovered spirit to die while I fell back into a semi-dreamlike existence as I walked through the day living on "default"? I chose to fight to keep my spirit alive with as much tenacity as I fought for my body.

If you are a cancer survivor, whether going through chemotherapy and/or radiation currently, or have been declared "cancer free" for years, do not let the gift you were given rot on the vine. You were blessed with a wake-up call that gave you a chance to reflect and assess who you have been, who you are, who you want to be, where you have been and, more importantly, where you want to go.

Take time each day to sit and breathe. Some advice given to me while I was undergoing treatment was to learn how to tell the difference between what was important and what was urgent - and to do what was important. What is more important than a life lived in alignment with who you are, with the "shape of your soul"? That, I think, is what is important.

Each moment life offers you choice. In the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament we are told: "Behold, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil". Choose life - the life of your real self, not the self conditioned by what the world has told you should be. Cancer gave you the gift to awaken to who you really are. Take up the challenge and answer it by living the most amazing life you desire.

Stress and Cancer

The relation of stress and cancer is not absolutely clear although, how we handle the stress of our life can certainly adversely affect our health and harm our mind and body.

And there's clear evidence that overloading one's brain and nervous system with anxious thinking (and losing touch with one's body, especially breathing) is a recipe for poor health.

But actually, there is no official evidence that stress can be a direct cause of cancer, but there is evidence that some link exists between stress and developing certain forms of cancer and also that stress can impact on how the cancer progresses.

I remember a very interesting conference I went to in Cannes, held by a French doctor who had spent time in the US, learning a system from the work of a German, Dr Hamer, (barred from practise, as too unconventional!) and had come back with a new approach, called 'Be Happy'.

He was explaining that any psycho-somatic ailment is caused first and foremost by a situation perceived by the individual as being unresolvable, shocking etc. and was in fact a stress.

The part of the brain affected by this trauma (and associated with a particular organ) 'just had to' displace somewhere where it could be attended to and possibly resolved.

The illness manifesting in a particular organ certainly gets our attention and it is then up to us to find the cause, the upset, the stress, then unfold the solution to solve the problem, to cure the cancer. Once this psychological healing has happened the organ affected by the cancer/illness starts to cure itself, the cancer having been manifested to solve a problem originally located in the brain.

His program is/was called 'Be Happy'. The cure being to accept everything that came along.I know it looks fairly impossible at first glance, but the sessions he offered (I took one) were to teach that approach.

Very interesting indeed! The cancer appearing so we have to solve a stress in our life!

According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is linked to 11 types of cancer, and numerous health problems. The most common cancers linked to smoking are lung cancer, cancer of the larynx, mouth, pharynx, esophagus and bladder. It has also been linked to cancer of the pancreas, cervix, kidneys, stomach and some types of leukemia. In women, smoking is known to be a risk factor for the development of breast cancer.

Facts About Tobacco

Tobacco has beneficial uses that date back many, many years. Whatever its use, the primary component is, of course, nicotine. As with any beneficial plant, the method of delivery and the use or misuse can lead to problems.

Tobacco actually makes a very good natural insect repellent in the home and garden. Soaking a very small amount in a quart of water overnight releases nicotine in the water, which can then be sprayed on garden plants to kill a variety of pests.

Tobacco can also be mixed with compost and spread under roses to get rid of aphids and other pests.

Have you ever had difficulty getting rid of moles and gophers? Those little varmints can totally destroy your lawn! The good news is - they hate tobacco. Shred a pack of unfiltered cigarettes and drop it down their holes, and see if that doesn't get rid of them.

There have been some few patients who have survived far beyond the usual one year prognosis for most mesothelioma victims and a handful that have even been cured, with no trace of the aggressive cancer several years after treatment (though recurrence is always possible).

Many medical experts are baffled by this observation and for most of the time they are yet to find a real scientific basis to explain why some mesothelioma patients survive and others do not.

There seems to be one common factor amongst those that have survived the disease for longer times - the immune system. Studies of those who have either survived or been cured of the disease reveal that most of these patients participated in some sort of therapy that enhanced their immune system. Some treatments included clinical trials in immunology while others involved alternative therapies dealing with the immune system.

A number of mesothelioma survivors have posted their stories on the Internet and have spoken to patients and their families with the hope of providing a brighter outlook for their future. These same survivors have also presented their cases to doctors and researchers. The most outspoken of these individuals is Paul Kraus, an Australian mesothelioma survivor. Kraus was diagnosed with abdominal/ peritoneal mesothelioma in 1997, a form of the disease that is tougher to treat than the more common pleural mesothelioma. Kraus worked in a factory 35 years earlier where he was exposed him to blue (crocidolite) asbestos.

Upon his diagnosis, Kraus changed his diet (he's now a vegetarian), added many vitamins and supplements to his daily routine, began "juicing," and tried a treatment known as ozone therapy. Kraus explains, "They took blood out of a vein, used an ozone machine to add ozone (a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms) to the blood and reintroduced it into my body through a drip. The rationale for that was that cancer does not like an oxygenated environment." The research in putting the protocol together took a lot of time, but in the long-run, Kraus believes the combination of all these treatments stabilized his mesothelioma. Today, tests show he still has the disease and his body is a bit weaker than it was, but he has no pain and his doctors tell him he has many more years to live. Kraus stresses the fact that he is not the only mesothelioma survivor.

He has cited the case of a man diagnosed 14 years ago at age 58 (no name given) who had a chest wall resection after diagnosis and has had no symptoms or recurrence since. His doctors believe there was "moderate host inflammatory response" and that spontaneous regression may be an immune-mediated phenomenon" - in other words, his immune system played a role in his survival.

Another survivor, Rhio O'Connor - who recently published a book about his fight with mesothelioma - has lived with the disease for seven years. He opted against the conventional methods of treatment like surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Instead, with the help of several medical physicians, he developed a regimen that included 100 supplements per day, changed his diet drastically, and now practices what he calls "mind-body medicine" (such as non-stress techniques like meditation). In his book, he recommends a variety of alternatives to traditional medicines and treatments.

All mesothelioma patients should be encouraged to participate in clinical trials especially those that are trying out new methods of boosting the immune system.

A mesothelioma patient is not compulsorily required to attend the trial of his/her mesothelioma lawsuit because most times by the time the lawsuit commences the patient will be too weak to attend, but if the patient decides to attend then he/she must be prepared to go through the different stages pf a trial. Each trial is different but there is usually an order of events in all civil cases and they will all pass through the following stages:

First, the judge (and possible a jury) will hear opening statements. Your lawyer will start by outlining your case. In response, the defendant's lawyers will outline how they hope to disprove your case. Opening statements are not evidence, but a brief outline of what each position hopes to prove during trial.
After opening statements, both parties will submit evidence for the judge and possible jury to review. This will include factual findings and testimony. Evidence such as old receipts, air quality tests, and medical records may come into play. Personal friends, family members, coworkers, doctors, and related experts may also be called to testify. If you are going to testify, upon being sworn in, your lawyer and the defendant's lawyer will proceed to question you about the case. Before this portion of the case, your lawyer will have reviewed with you not only the questions he or she will ask, but also the questions the defendant's lawyer is likely to ask of you. It is very important to assert your side of the case while answering all questions honestly. Witnesses will go through the same testimony process as well. Physical evidence, such as medical records or work history, will be submitted as evidence to the court.
Presentation of the evidence is followed by closing arguments. This element of trial is extremely important, especially in the case of a jury trial. The plaintiff will give closing arguments first. This speech will sum up the facts, discredit the defendant, and ask the jury to empathize and rule in your favor. The defense will then present a closing argument as well, in which they will attempt to refute your claims.
If the trial involves a jury, all 12 members of the jury will retire to a conference room to deliberate after closing statements. Deliberation by the jury can take just an hour or two, or it can take several days. In high profile cases, the jury may be sequestered and sent to a hotel instead of home. However, in most civil cases, the jury is not sequestered. When the jury reaches a verdict, all are called back to court and the foreman of the jury (elected by the other jurors) announces the decision.

Sometimes upon the completion of this initial trial the defendants can appeal the verdict if it does not favor them, the period of time for this appeal varies sometimes it lasts up to a month and some other times it takes longer. If the defendant wins the appeal, you may also be able to also challenge this decision if factual errors are found or procedures were not carried out correctly. This depends on the court and on the details of the appeal case.

Keep in mind that at any point during the trial, you and the defendant can decide to reach a settlement out of court if the defendant is willing to pay a reasonable amount of money. Usually if the defendant's lawyer sees that you have a very strong case at some stage of the trial they will approach you for a possible out of court settlement. Once this is agreed upon the complaint by the plaintiff is withdrawn and the trial is stopped.

Mesothelioma victims should seek to know as much as they can about mesothelioma trials and lawsuits so that they do not get easily discouraged along the way.

Mesothelioma (also known as 'diffuse' or 'malignant' Mesothelioma) is a type of cancer, which typically affects the thin membranes that line the chest (pleural mesothelioma). Less commonly it can affect the linings of the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). It may also affect the lining of the heart {pericardial mesothelioma} and very rarely the lining of the testes {testicular mesothelioma}.

Pleural Mesothelioma

The pleural lining has two layers - an inner (visceral) layer which lines the lung and an outer (parietal) layer which lines the chest wall. The pleura produces pleural fluid to lubricate the space between the two layers allowing the layers to slide easily over each without friction other as we inhale and exhale during breathing.

Pleural Mesothelioma causes the pleura to thicken. This will lead to compression of the lung or attachment of the tumor to the chest wall. Fluid, sometimes several litres, can collect between the two layers and cause breathlessness. This is known as a Pleural effusion.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

The peritoneum also has two layers, the inner (visceral) layer which is next to the abdominal organs and the outer (parietal) layer which lines the abdominal wall. This cancer will make the peritoneum to thicken and fluid to collect in the abdomen, this collection of fluid is called ascites and it causes abdominal swelling. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is not as common as Pleural Mesothelioma.

What causes Mesothelioma?

Exposure to asbestos is the major cause of this type of cancer. There may however be some other unknown less common causes. It has previously been a rare disease but is now occurring more frequently because of the heavy use of asbestos in the post-war years. For most people diagnosed with Mesothelioma the exposure happened 20-40 years before the onset of symptoms (It may in some instances be a longer or a shorter interval than this.). Sometimes the asbestos exposure may have been very brief and not always easy to identify. However most commonly, the cancer usually shows up in people that have had repeated exposure to asbestos, usually in a working environment. There are several types of asbestos all of which have been known to cause Mesothelioma.

How is Mesothelioma diagnosed?

Early diagnosis is difficult as the symptoms do not appear until the disease is well advanced, and in most cases the first obvious sign is sudden difficulty in breathing caused by an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space - a pleural effusion. There may also be some other symptoms like as chest pain, weight loss, hemoptysis {coughing blood in sputum},and anaemia. Scans and X-rays can provide strong evidence to support the diagnosis especially coupled with a history of asbestos exposure. However, these symptoms are also common to other less serious diseases so other diseases to be certain of a correct diagnosis more investigations often need to be carried out.

These tests include Scans, Fluid taken for laboratory examination, possibly needle biopsy or keyhole surgery to take a biopsy (a small sample of tissue) is likely to be carried out to help with the confirmation of the diagnosis. These tests and results may take several weeks to complete.

What are the available treatment options?

Mesothelioma does not respond very well to usually recommended cancer therapy such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. There are a number of trials being run in an attempt to improve treatment but nothing has been found to cure this disease. The type of treatment offered depends on several factors. These should include patient choice, the general condition of the patient, and the stage of the how cancer {the level of advancement of the cancer}.

The initial most helpful treatment is that which deals with symptoms.

Removing fluid from around the lung can help to relieve breathlessness. Firstly the fluid may be drained either by drawing off fluid or inserting a small drainage tube. However the fluid often re accumulates and the chest physician or surgeon may perform a procedure called a 'Pleurodesis'. This is an attempt to stick the lung surface to the chest wall by inserting sterile talc into the pleural space. This may be done by a surgeon using 'key hole surgery' otherwise called VATS - Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery.

Surgery

There are minor forms of surgery which the surgeon may carry out during the VATS procedure to remove some of the bulk of the tumour. Surgery may also improve some of the symptoms of the disease.

A very major operation which is called an Extra-pleural Pneumonectomy(EPP) is only suitable for a very select group of patients with early stage disease and who are physically and mentally able to tolerate such extensive surgery. The operation involves the removal of the whole affected lung along with its lining, the lining of the heart and part of the
diaphragm. This operation can only be carried out by a limited number of thoracic surgeons in the country.

Chemotherapy

This is drug treatment used to try to destroy or control cancer cells. Unlike some other cancers there is no evidence that chemotherapy ever cures Mesothelioma. Some trials and studies have however indicated that it may help to improve symptoms temporarily and may extend life expectancy slightly.

Not all patients with Mesothelioma will benefit from chemotherapy and there is no way of knowing which patients will benefit and which will not. It is important for you to discuss this with the doctors and nurses involved in providing it.

Radiotherapy
This is the use of high energy radiation to kill diseased cells in the body.

In Mesothelioma it can be used in two ways:

A short course of treatment to the chest wall where a biopsy has been done. This is a preventative measure and is intended to stop Mesothelioma growing in the skin layer.
Some patients with pain may get some benefit from radiotherapy to help to kill any remaining cancer cells after major surgery.

All throughout my medical career I have encountered patients who are in the fight of their lives against cancer. Right now there are over 100 different types of cancer and they can affect every organ in your body. Cancer typically occurs when cells that are not normal grow and spread rapidly. Normal cells grow and divide and know to stop growing. Cancer cells just continue to grow and divide out of control and don't die when they're supposed to.

The tips I am going to provide you are for both lowering your potential risk and fighting cancer. Keep in mind that there are many other ways, but I want to give you the ones which I feel can help you the best.

1) Participate in Raw Juicing

I have been raw juicing for the past 5 years, and it is the best thing I can possibly do for myself. Each day people are required to eat more fruits and vegetables but they do the opposite. What I see is that they will consume more fats and oils from fast foods and others. From what I have been saying on my personal website, a healthy body is more powerful than it is given credit for. Instead of worrying about eating a whole apple or a few carrots, you can purchase a small juicer and put everything into one, so to speak. It helps you to get all your nutrients and save a great deal of time.

2) Consume more Antioxidants

In the fight against cancer, antioxidants help to strengthen your immune system immensely. People do not realize that your immune system is heavily damaged when cancer attacks. A few sources of antioxidants you should look into are vitamins a through e, green tea, zinc, and soy. I make sure that I at least have one cup of green tea per day after a healthy breakfast.

3) Improve you Mental Health Status

Believe it or not, when you get a sickness it really takes a toll on your mental health. In turn, the lowered mental health state adversely affects your immune system. It is sort of like a domino affect. Many of my patients that I deal with say they love to go outdoors and spend time with friends in order to prevent stress. Look at it this way, the happier you are the healthier you become. Just imagine the damage that can be done to your system when you are always stressed out and sad.

4) Get Plenty of Exercise

From a medical standpoint, exercise is highly beneficial to overall health. All of you reading this article should understand that exercise is needed to help strengthen your immune system and keep body fat levels low. If you do not get great exercise, you will increase your risk for cancer and also increase your risk of obesity. I see cancer and obesity as going hand in hand. The more body fat you are carrying around, the more stress is it on your body. This will do a great deal of harm to your immune system and then this factor will increase your risk of developing cancer. The exercises I love to advise my patients to get into are running, jogging, strength training, and swimming.

5) Consume Distilled Water

Ever since I did research on distilled water, I have decided to permanently switch over from spring water. Based on my findings steam distilled water is mainly pure H20. The water coming from the faucet and bottled spring waters contain many toxins and chemicals ranging from chlorine and fluoride to magnesium. Drinking distilled water will in fact help your body to fight off and release toxins without the burden of dealing with newly introduced chemicals.

What It Is

The cervix is an organ that is only present in women, and connects the uterus to the vagina. When cells in the cervix start to undergo abnormal changes, known as pre-cancerous changes, then this can represent the early stages of cervical cancer.

There are two types of cervical cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Of these, we know that the vast majority of cases are squamous cell carcinomas. Cervical cancer can be picked up early and prevented from occurring through regular screening, which is recommended for women of all ages.

Causes of Cervical Cancer

We should make it clear that, as with all cancers, cervical cancer is caused by factors such as a weak immune system, an acidic pH balance, oxygen deprivation and toxins in the body. However, it is also commonly caused by certain types of HPV (human papilloma virus). Some of these can cause genital warts and, as such, cervical cancer can arise as a result of a sexually transmitted infection.

Smoking is also known to lead to cervical cancer, and we know that a combination of an HPV and smoking, or an HPV and another sexually transmitted disease, can lead to a greater level of risk.

Cervical Cancer Symptoms

The most common symptom for cervical cancer, and the one that sends most women to the doctor in the first place, is abnormal vaginal bleeding. This could include bleeding outside of the regular period, bleeding after the menopause or any other type of bleeding.

Pain during sexual intercourse is also known to be a symptom, as is bleeding directly after intercourse. Pain related to sex is known as dyspareunia in the medical community.

Conventional Treatments

If the cancer is confined to the outside layer of the cervix, then we have the option of a number of surgery treatments that can be completed to remove the affected cells. The most common include laser surgery, which kills the cancerous cells using a laser beam; cryosurgery, which is the killing of cancerous cells through freezing; and a cone biopsy, which is when a piece of cervical tissue affected by the cancer is completely removed.

These procedures are fine if the cancer is in its early stages, but if the cancer is invasive and has managed to get inside the outer layer, then a hysterectomy is the most common form of surgery. This could either be a simple hysterectomy or a radical hysterectomy, which is more serious. However, both involve the removal of the uterus, making it impossible to become pregnant.

Chemotherapy and radiation are also commonly used if the cancer has spread, but we would warn you that these include a lot of unpleasant side effects, including hair loss, weakness and nausea.

Alternative and Complementary Treatments

What It Is

Brain tumours are slightly different from other forms of cancer in that there are over 100 types of different tumour. Some of these are malign, whilst some of them can be malignant.

Like all cancers, a brain tumour occurs due to an abnormal growth of cells. Brain tumours can affect any part of the brain, and can also be found on the inside of the skull.

They can also consist of primary tumours (tumours which start in the brain) and secondary tumours (tumours which have started in another part of body and have spread to the brain).

Causes of Brain Tumours

All cancers are essentially caused by a number of factors, and we know that toxins in the body, oxygen deprivation, an acidic pH balance and a weak immune system can all be to blame.

However, when it comes to brain tumours we know that there are a few specific factors that can lead to their formation. Generally, brain tumours are more common in older people, although they can occur in people of all ages. As well as that, a history of cancer in the family will make it more likely to become victim to a brain tumour. Although less likely, radioactivity has also been proven to influence the growth of brain tumours.

Brain Tumour Symptoms

There are countless symptoms associated with brain tumours. The most common symptom by far is a headache or a series of headaches. Headaches can be particularly painful, or they can seem quite normal. Most people visit the doctor when they have suddenly started experiencing headaches with greater frequency or intensity.

As well as headaches, other common symptoms include nausea, dizziness, fits, memory loss and drowsiness. An increase in the pressure in the head, known as raised ICP, is another common symptom. This is caused by a brain tumour growing and putting pressure on the inside of the head. However, we should clarify that all of these symptoms can be symptoms of less serious conditions, so although they should be checked out, none of them should cause undue alarm.

Conventional Treatments

The type of treatment required depends on the stage of the brain tumour. Surgery is often required to remove the tumour, but this will be dictated by the position of the tumour. Sometimes the tumour can be too near to a very sensitive area and it can therefore be too risky. If it is not possible to remove the whole tumour then sometimes only a part of it is removed, but this can still help.

Surgery can be very risky, and it can also lead to infection and bleeding in some cases. Due to the proximity of the surgery area to crucial parts of the nervous system, it can also lead to partial paralysis of the face and vision loss.

Radiation and chemotherapy are also options when it comes to treating brain tumours, but these come with harsh side effects including loss of hair, drowsiness and nausea.

Radiosurgery is also used to treat brain tumours. This involves directing powerful beams of radiation directly at the tumours, killing them without damaging the rest of the surrounding area. However, this can also lead to headaches and fatigue.

As all treatments can sometimes lead to problems with speech, thought and vision, they may often require some sort of follow-up treatment as well as the initial treatment.

Alternative and Complementary Treatments

The American Cancer society estimates that 267,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, and about 39,800 deaths occurred from this disease. The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer for American women is about one in nine. Many surveys suggest that it is the health problem that is most feared by women. However, if breast cancer is detected early, the five-year-and-beyond survival rate is at about 95 percent.

There is no single answer as to what causes breast cancer, and it is reported that about 60 percent of breast cancers develop without any known risk factors. Researchers believe that estrogen in the most likely culprit in many cases of breast cancer. Estrogen promotes cellular growth in the tissues of the breasts and reproductive organs, and cancer is a disorder of unrestrained cellular growth. Some of the risk factors for breast cancer include onset of menstruation before age nine, menopause after age fifty-five, having a first child after age forty, and having no or few children. The one thing that all of these risk factors have in common is that they result in the breasts being exposed to more estrogen for longer periods of time.

Men can also get breast cancer, but they account for less than 1 percent of breast cancer cases. While it occurs less frequently, breast cancer in men usually is diagnosed at a later, and therefore more serious stage because neither physicians or patients tend to suspect it. About 1,500 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the United States, with 400 dying from it. Cure rates are generally the same for men as they are for women.

Identifying A Breast Cancer's Stage

When talking about breast cancer stages, it is aimed at describing the extent of the cancer in the body. So, if you ask how a breast cancer is staged, doctors often start to classify whether it is invasive or non-invasive. Other factors considered are the tumor size, number of nymph modes involved, and what other parts of the body it has managed to affect.

Breast Cancer Stage I

Once the breast cancer enters this stage, it is now categorized as an invasive type of breast cancer. Meaning, the cancer cells have now worked their way towards the neighboring tissues. Stage I breast cancer also exhibit the following characteristics:

• The cancerous tumor has reached the size of 2 centimeters.

• No lymph modes are affected.

Breast Cancer Stage II

For this particular stage of breast cancer, it is also known as an invasive type of cancer and is broken down into two more categories:

1) Stage IIA

Even in this particular stage, the conditions can be different:

• A tumor does not exist in the breast but cancerous cells are detected in the lymph nodes.

• A tumor could exist but measures less than 2 centimeters;

• The tumor has expanded beyond 2 centimeters but less than 5 centimeters without reaching the lymph nodes.

2) Stage IIB

This invasive level of the cancer are recognized as either one of the following:

• The tumor exceeds 2 centimeters in size but less than 5 centimeters, while also reaching the lymph nodes.

• The tumor is more than 5 centimeters in size but has not yet reached the axillary lymph nodes.

Breast Cancer Stage III

1) Stage IIIA

In this stage, the tumor could either be detected or not. Aside from the axillary lymph nodes, cancer can also stick to other structures outside of the lymph nodes and become clumped together.

2) Stage IIIB

In this stage, the tumor can grow in size and affect other areas of the body outside of the actual breast, whether th chest wall or skin of the breast. This is the stage wherein inflammatory breast cancer takes place.

3) Stage IIIC

In some cases, sign of breast cancer might not be detectable yet. However, the tumor could already be spreading towards the breast skin, chest wall, and below your collarbone.

Breast Cancer Stage IV

In this level, the cancerous cells have managed to spread to various organs of the body. Therefore, the cancer is no longer restricted on the breast and lymph nodes, which signifies the initial diagnosis of breast cancer. The reason why diagnosis is done only during this stage is
because cancerous cells were not detected while still within the breast.

Recognizing breast cancer stages does more than just identifying treatment options, but also enables doctors and patients to understand the developmental pattern of the disease.

Types of Thyroid Cancer Explained

Thyroid cancer is one of the less common types of cancer to be diagnosed and, for most people who contact it, with treatment, the prospects of recovery are very good.

Many people discovering a lump in their thyroid region perhaps automatically fear that this might indicate cancer but most estimates reckon that only about 5% of all thyroid lumps are actually cancerous. Women are more at risk of thyroid cancer than men, with the highest chance of having the problem being between the ages of 30 and 55, before it decreases somewhat. The risk for men increases with age, until the age of about 75.

The four different types of thyroid cancer are papillary thyroid cancer, follicular thyroid cancer and the less common medullary and anaplastic tumours. Papillary cancer, the most common type, is also the one most likely to appear in people in the younger age bracket. Follicular cancer is more probable in older people. Medullary cancer can sometimes be genetically inherited so, if there is a family history of this problem,

regular check ups and blood tests are a good idea. Anaplastic tumours, the rarest type of thyroid cancer, are more common in elderly patients and can develop more quickly than other types, whilst also sometimes being difficult to treat. In addition, it is possible that a person could develop a lymphoma of the thyroid, but this is even more uncommon.

There is no indication whatsoever that having an overactive or underactive thyroid can increase the risks of thyroid cancer. However, it has been estimated that approximately 1 in 5 cases of thyroid cancer do actually

occur in people who, in the past, have had nodules, goitres or inflammation of the thyroid. This is particularly evident amongst people who have had nodules at a younger age.

Other possible people at more risk of thyroid cancer appear to be those who have had radiotherapy in the neck; been exposed to radiation in their work; suffer from the bowel disorder known as Familial Adenomatous Polyposis; have low iodine levels; have recently had babies or are going through the menopause.

Research studies, however, indicate that by far the largest contributory factor towards thyroid cancer appears to be an unhealthy diet. It appears that eating refined rather than unrefined carbohydrates leads to a higher risk of the problem developing. Eating good amounts of vegetables, containing Vitamins C and E, and avoiding too much butter, cheese and red meat seems to be a way of trying to avoid thyroid cancer.

Dependent upon the type of cancer you have, your age, fitness levels and general health and how far your cancer has developed, your specialist doctor will decide upon the requisite treatment for you. Predominantly, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and occasionally hormone therapy are used.
